The Defining Image

Postmodern pastors reflect the character of the Holy Trinity

As the Father is the source of all truth, postmodern pastors are the holders of the community's beliefs. The storyteller. They are wise and educated.

As the Son is the incarnation of truth, postmodern pastors embody the beliefs of the community. They are devoted.

As the Spirit is active in truth, postmodern pastors are active in the work of the community. They are skilled.

This is the summary, to be expanded on later. The question to be asked at the paradigmatic level is, "What is that a pastor ought to be?" I believe that we all can agree with these 3 essential characteristics. Whether we see the pastor as professional or not, charismatic or not, authoritative or not... we would welcome such a one as is wise in the truths held by the community, personally embodies those beliefs and skillfully participates in carrying out those beliefs.

The Hope

On the inside we call it "the craft" but it seems to be a dying art.

Modern pastors have transformed their art in the image of a wallstreet businessman. They perform well, but have lost the soul.

Postmodern pastors have tossed out the businessman and with it both authority and education. They sit presently with no idenity, no form, no beauty.

My hope is that it is not too late to join the conversation on forming the postmodern pop pastor in the image of the Holy Trinity.
